Hi.

Welcome to my blog. I mainly post about my sewing projects, as Iā€™m building a colourful and comfortable everyday wardrobe suitable for a working mum of primary school children. I really love African wax fabric, so that features heavily. I also occassionally post about family life in Edinburgh and travel. Hope you have a nice stay!

Silk Elizabeth Suzann Georgia top

Minerva recently brought out a range of Minvera exclusive silk fabrics, which is very exciting because I love silk to wear! I initially missed out on the first few sets of bases because I was busy when the call came out, but this base (silk satin) was added later and also comes in this print which I didn't see in the first batch. I love the big graphic shapes! The colour is a little different for me as I don't usually wear pale pastelly shaded but I thought I'd give it a shot with the darker colours in as well.

This fabric is the non stretch silk satin, it's quite substantial which I wasn't expecting because I didn't pay proper attention to the description. This is 129gsm, there is also a lighter weight silk satin that is 70gsm. It looks like it's two layers, it has the shiny print on the outside and a matte translucent white on the other.

For the pattern I chose to make another Elizabeth Suzann Georgia, which is fast becoming my most made pattern. I wanted to stay tried and true given this is quite an expensive fabric and I knew it would work well with the mid weight weight which gives it structure.

In the past I've usually French seamed everything with the Georgia, but it can get a bit fiddly on the side seams because the curve is quite steep. So in the interest of not messing it up, I French seamed the shoulder seams only but overlocked the side seams and the but when attaching the sleeve bands. I also added a wee line of top stitching to hold the sleeve band seam allowance in place.

The fabric was really easy to work with because of the more substantial weight it isn't slinky. So easy to cut and pressed really nicely. I used an extra sharp microtextile needle, I'm not sure if that was necessary but I had some so thought I might as well!

I'm really happy with the resulting top! Of course I love the way the Georgia looks and it being silk just makes it extra luxurious
