Birgitta Helmersson zero waste shirt
I've been meaning to make another one of these Birgitta Helmersson zero waste blouses for a while, then this very strange but absolutely perfect piece of fabric came along. One of the school mums was having a destash to get rid of her late mums sewing stuff and I picked it up there. It's a lovely feeling lawn. Anyway, I brought it home and realised it's a really off shape. It was just under 90cms wide, selvedge to selvedge, and about 180cms long. I don't think I've ever seen such a narrow fabric, even the narrow African wax is wider than that!
Anyway, since the design works in either direction, it was perfect for a zero waste shirt. The last one I made was with 145cm width, which was just shorter than it says is needed for my size. This time I cut it down to 155, if I remember correctly.
In terms of sewing, this fabric was an absolute dream, pressed really well and the lighter weight meant I managed five automatic buttonholes on first try, which is basically unheard of for my machine! After faffing about for absolutely hours with the back facing last time, that bit went smoothly, but I had some difficulty with the placket instructions. I still do not understand what possessed her to take photos with (1) a white fabric and (2) one that looks identical on both sides.
Other than that, nothing to report. The buttons are from the stash.
