Hi.

Welcome to my blog. I mainly post about my sewing projects, as I’m building a colourful and comfortable everyday wardrobe suitable for a working mum of primary school children. I really love African wax fabric, so that features heavily. I also occassionally post about family life in Edinburgh and travel. Hope you have a nice stay!

Peppermint Pocket skirt

Peppermint Pocket skirt

When the Peppermint Pocket skirt, a free pattern by Peppermint magazine, designed by Paper Theory was released in the autumn (September?), I swooned about it along with everyone else. Usually I do this and then move on with my sewing plans as normal, but for some reason this time it was enough to jump it to the top of my queue. Probably because I’ve been spending so much time in elasticated waist trousers, I wanted to extend that feeling to skirts as well. Most of my skirts are too small now anyway, on account of my lockdown weight gain, so that was another reason.

It turned out to be an excellent decision, I’ve worn this so much, over leggings, and then its easy to slip off when I want to go for a run.

Details below!

Pattern: Peppermint Pocket skirt

Size: 16 as per my measurements

Fabric: burgundy needlecord I bought in Leicester during the October break. There was only 1.45 metres left so I got it cheap. I wanted something autumnal and cosy, but that would still cope with the gathering, and needlecord works. I really like the colour.

Adjustments: I shortened it by 15cms to fit it into what fabric I had. I actually think that length looks pretty midi on me, and 1.5 metres is a lot easier to acquire than 1.7 metres without wasting fabric, so I might stick with this length if I make another.

I haven’t topstitched the waistband, because I actually think I’ve made it slightly too loose, but that’s an adjustment I plan to make once I’ve shortened the elastic. Hard to work up the motivation for that though, as it fits fine.

Mistakes: I was going to put this under adjustments, but it’s really not an adjustment, its definitely a mistake: I sewed the pockets on the wrong way round, so they are really low, too low for me to reach. I thought this would drive me mad, but actually it’s not as annoying as I thought it would be. It’s not stopping me from wearing this skirt all the time anyway!
