Hi.

Welcome to my blog. I mainly post about my sewing projects, as Iā€™m building a colourful and comfortable everyday wardrobe suitable for a working mum of primary school children. I really love African wax fabric, so that features heavily. I also occassionally post about family life in Edinburgh and travel. Hope you have a nice stay!

Fried egg hoodies for everyone!

Fried egg hoodies for everyone!

This project was inspired by a RTW jumper I kept getting advertised at me on Instagram (I still do actually, I obviously bamboozled them by lingering on it repeatedly). The boys have been outgrowing their clothes recently, so it was a good time to make them some. Then I wanted one myself!

The hoodies are RTW, bought off eBay. I looked for organic cotton ones, but that wasn't possible for the boys ones unfortunately, nothing in smaller sizes. My own one is organic though, and a nice design with inseam pockets, which you don't often see in hoodies.

The eggs are made from scrap fabrics. The white is some sort of activewear jersey, originally bought as a remnant for making Ellis penguin hoodie. It's a medium weight, which meant it was just about possible to turn under the edges of the shape.

For the first one I made a template out of paper, but for the later two I freehand drew the shape on using a removable fabric marker pen. I sewed the outline using white thread, which helped me then turn it under. It was still really hard to do! I trimmed around the shape to about 5cms, then pressed that under with maximum steam and lots of pins. I then topstitched as close to the edge as I could manage and trimmed it back closely once I'd done that. I didn't bother taking out the original stitching on the edge. I'm not sure this is the most efficient way of doing it, but it did work

For the yolk I used some fleece backed sweatshirting left over from my tacara, also used in the penguin costume. It was too thick to even attempt to turn under so I just left the edges raw.

Once I'd assembled the eggs, I just sewed them into the hoodies. C'est tout!

Super happy with all of these, and I love that people keep commenting on them and that the boys have taken to theirs. Ellis has been wearing his pretty much continuously since I made it.
