Hi.

Welcome to my blog. I mainly post about my sewing projects, as I’m building a colourful and comfortable everyday wardrobe suitable for a working mum of primary school children. I really love African wax fabric, so that features heavily. I also occassionally post about family life in Edinburgh and travel. Hope you have a nice stay!

Waves and Wild Child Heyday dungarees

Some sewing that’s not for me! Ellis and I have been reading the Ottoline books and in one of them she’s got an awesome pair of dungarees with lots of pockets, and he’s been asking me for his own pair for ages. It was initially reluctant, as 7 and a half year olds don’t tend to wear dungarees much, but he kept at it, and thankfully he hasn’t changed his mind. One thing that’s great about him is he likes what he likes and doesn’t care what others think.

Franca and Ellis are wearing blue dungarees and yellow tops. Francas ones anre Luxy and Yak, Ellis' are the Waves and Wild Heyday dungarees

Pattern: Waves and Wild Heyday dungarees, kids size range – there’s also an adult size range. This pattern is very similar to the Lucy and Yak dungarees you can buy (that I’m wearing in the picture I am in)  RTW with the five pocket design, and there being no waist, but the bib is slightly narrower and the back view is similar to the front view rather than going out diagonally. The pattern has a buttonhole option but I went for the loops like the L&Ys

Size: 10. Ellis is 7 and a half but it matches his height. It’s probably a wee bit on the large side, including in length, but he grows so fast better to be safe than sorry.

Fabric: This is an 8 wale corduroy from the Minerva Core Range, the colour is called Royal Blue. It looked a bit more purpley on the screen than in real life, but that’s probably a good thing! It’s soft and presses well.

Instructions: They are good and detailed with clear instructions. I ended up being one step ahead because everything is broken up in a lot of detail that more experienced sewers probably don’t need. But better too much detail than too little. One thing worth noting is that the seam allowance is 1cm throughout, which I loved. The standard 1.5 always feels too big and leaves you with annoyingly bulky seams.

The only thing that could be slightly challenging is that there when you attach the loops and straps you have to sew through 6 layers of fabric. It was fine in this cord, but I did bend a (pretty old, so probably needed changing anyway) needle. It does say it’s an intermediate pattern for this reason. In a heavier or more rigid fabric it might be more of an issue.

Overall love this pattern, and this fabric, and I have another cord project coming up already!
