Hogwarts Cloak

In February we went to the German school Fasching/Carnival party, and Milo complained that he had no fancy dress clothes other than the ghost thing from Halloween, while Ellis has a million things. This is true, so I agreed to make him a Harry Potter cloak. I have three years worth of burda magazine subscriptions, and they always have Carnival outfits, and luckily there was a suitable pattern, the Magician’s Apprentice Costume.

We went for the blue colour, because Milo’s house at school is Blue. This is why he also says he’s a Ravenclaw, I’d love to say because he realises it’s the best but no ;-) We got a sew on Ravenclaw badge, which was easier to find than I thought it would be.

The fabric is standard satin from Minerva , which I was giften in return for a blog post on the Minerva website once they reopen post lock down. I made the size 134, which is right for Milo (who’s 128cm tall). It was weirdly short though, I’m not quite sure what was going on really. I ended up lengthening it by 15cm, and it’s a good length, but still looks way shorter than the pattern photos, so I’m wondering if there was a lengthening instruction somewhere I missed, maybe because there was not enough space on the pattern sheet. Not sure, but it was straightforward to do.

This was more involved to sew than I thought it would be, not hard, but a lot of steps. It’s like a fully lined coat, really, isn’t it. I also didn’t help myself as I didn’t mark any notches, which made figuring out which sleeve was which a bit of a nightmare. I did figure it out eventually! I also sewed the hood on the wrong way round initially, but I can blame this on nothing other than my own foggy brained ness. So I’m pretty proud for completing this!

Milo loves it too which is brilliant.

We took these pictures in a tiny bit of wooded land near our nearest shopping centre, which is just the perfect daily walk distance away. I made Milo promise that he was going to pose for lots of pictures (Minerva ask for at least six pictures in their blog posts), and it worked well didn’t it. Some nice ones.
